YOUNG PEOPLE COLLECTING THE STORIES OF CARLTON'S OLDER RESIDENTS

Where were you born?

What was Carlton like when you first got here?

Where did you go shopping?

Where did you go to meet other people?

These are some of the questions that were asked in the The Local Histories Local Stories Project, which involved students from the Carlton Primary School documenting the stories of older residents living in the Carlton Housing Estates and the surrounding area. Funded by the City of Melbourne, this project aims to reflect the diversity of Carlton and the people, young and old, that make it the vibrant place it is today.

The people interviewed in this project were from a variety of backgrounds and, although living in the same suburb, experienced it in many different ways. Delia has lived in her Carlton flat for twenty-five years and watched her daughter grow up there. Irena discovered Carlton through its artists. Qui loves saying hello to the children that she sees in the street. The stories, recorded and rewritten by the young people, form a very personal record of the old inner city suburb of Carlton, and the changes that have made it what it is today. The older residents remembered friends, neighbours and work mates, people who have helped to form their impression of Carlton. The young people learnt about Carlton in a time before schools had computers (a popular question in the interview process!) and the Neil Street Primary School was still only a plan. Do you have a story about Carlton?
